Illum - LED Table Lamp
Illum desk lamp is a combination of an elegant design and superior craftsmanship. It provides diffused omnidirectional lighting and adds accent color to the interior.
The leaf-shaped light housings were constructed from flat sheets of fiberglass. White spray paint was applied to both sides of the fiberglass and later was sanded off partially to add more visual interest to the material as well as some light depth. All of the connections and wiring are done on the inside.
This piece does not have any exposed fasteners. The leaf-shaped light shades were wired and assembled prior to the final installation. It uses specially designed wire brackets to hold and lock each shade to the aluminium tube. Four concrete anchors were installed from the inside of the poured concrete base to provide strong support for the tube. |
The main stem is fabricated out of aluminium square tubing because this material provides an excellent support structure. It allows to insert internal fasteners, and gives a great solution for the wiring routing. The aluminium also reflects the light well and picks up colors of the surrounding; it makes this piece blend into the interior.
The base for this project had to be heavy enough as well as stable. The poured concrete provided a great solution for this problem. It was poured into a form with a hollow interior to provide a safe housing for the LED control board and power converter. |
This piece was designed and built by me for my Plastics 2017 Fall class. Project duration - 4 weeks
