M12 - Record Player Console
The M12 is a compact console that’s designed to complement and showcase the BeoGram 6500 record player with a small collection of vinyl records. As a designer, I wanted to create a visually interesting contemporary piece of furniture. This piece is inspired by Danish mid-century modern style furniture. This was my first project at the Industrial Design program.
When this project started I didn't have any sketching experience, I only relied on my ability to visualize the product in my mind and create something unique and special. I sketched some general shapes and moved on to making paper and cardboard models to get a better understanding of this design. I also realized that I will not have too many opportunities in this program to design and build something at this scale and I set a goal for myself to start this program with a statement piece that I would be proud of when I graduate.

The detailed SolidWorks model allowed me to fine-tune the perfect proportion for this unit. Sixteen individual parts were dimensioned, which provided easy and precise manufacturing. |

Walnut was chosen for this project because it is easy to work with and it has a straight grain. The black glass shelves added some interesting contrast and made this piece more current. The side box on this unit was constructed out of joined planks of walnut. Biscuits were installed with glue to make these wide panels extra strong and to prevent the wood from splitting and deforming in the future. The top shelf is held together with 3 rails and a side piece that has the same angle cut as the rail profile. The bottom shelf has two rails. To create an extra-strong construction each rail is held by 4 twisted-grooved oak dowel pins. |
|
The upper shelf was designed and built at a 91° angle to compensate for the glass and record player weight. A water-based Polycrylic clear satin protective finish was chosen to preserve the natural beauty of walnut. The satin finish does not compete with the reflective surfaces of the black glass and record player materials. Seven coats were applied for extra durability. |
The bottom shelf is symmetrical. it allows this piece of furniture to rotate 180° to have the side compartment for the tall books either on the left side or the right side. The bottom shelf has two rubber strips and a rear angle which hold the record collection perfectly without sliding and falling down.
This piece was designed and built by me for my Woods 2017 Spring class. Project duration - 8 weeks
Materials: Walnut frame, black glass shelves, Aluminium and rubber records support.
