Photon - LED Desk Lamps
The Photon desk lamp is innovative task light. The heavy base is visually light thanks to the negative space. This product has a sculptural appearance when not in use and blends into the interior because of the clear materials.
This product is designed to solve the two main problems that conventional desk lamps have: the harsh edge in between the illuminated surfaces and the lack of ambient light.
The Photon achieves the solution with the advanced design of the main light rod: the geometry of this part reflects eighty percent of the light traveling through the rod to the task area. The remaining twenty percent of the light becomes ambient light.

The PHOTON is a minimalist desktop light. It would be inappropriate to place any labels or logos in the obvious locations. I wanted the final user to study this object from all angles. The name is engraved on the inside of the end cap and it is only visible when the light is on.

The clear, thin, power cord is designed to be as unnoticeable as possible to complete the minimalist look.

Despite the minimalist look, this product faced multiple engineering challenges. The carbon fiber LED housing and the acrylic beam are only 1.25" in diameter. I develop a custom friction hinge that serves multiple functions: heat-sink, LED support, and an arm connecting brace.
This product is designed to be completely serviceable. The disassembly and the repair is easy.

The base and the support arms are made from metal to provide the stability and durability.
The metal arms slide into the main ring from below and lock in the position.
The bottom ring is made from a non-conductive composite material. It prevents an accidental switch trigger when the lamp is placed on the metal surface. This part also supports and keeps the metal arm in the position.
This desk lamp was designed and built by me for my manufacturing Spring 2019 class. Project duration - 4 months
